Aspen’s EverGreen ZeroWaste, a self-described “social enterprise with a mission to produce community and environmental improvements regarding resource recovery and upstream waste diversion,” is the recipient of a $120,000 grant administered by the Colorado Department of Public Health and the Environment (CDPHE). The funds will be used to expand the existing Roaring Fork Valley compost collection program while keeping it affordable (bear-proof dumpsters can run $2,000 each; the grant will enable the organization to absorb the cost), as well as create new green-sector jobs. EverGreen ZeroWaste currently collects up to 80,000 pounds of compostable materials each week at residential and commercial locations, a figure that is expected to double with the new funding.
