The advent of fall brings a shift in weight in the atmosphere—a seriousness, a sense of urgency that rarely darkened the carefree days of summer. I’m guessing that heaviness is ingrained in us from our ancestors who were responsible for producing all of their own food and had to survive long winters on whatever harvests the fall yielded.

The majority of us, however, are lucky to benefit from food painstakingly grown by local farmers and ranchers. The fall harvest is vital for them, as the income from its sales will literally support them through the long winter months. Now is a great time to show them our appreciation, and celebrate the region’s bounty, by supporting the remaining farmers’ markets and attending harvest dinners and festivals. Savor the season!
